NAIROBI, Kenya — Long plagued by corruption and inept government, people in the Democratic Republic of Congo were confronting a new problem on Friday: thousands of prisoners on the lam, including hard-core felons and possibly war criminals. In what appears to have been the biggest prison break ever in the African country, nearly 4, inmates were missing from its most notorious penitentiary, the maximum-security Makala prison in Kinshasa, the capital. The prison break itself was not news — it happened on Wednesday, when members of a cultish rebel group known as Bundu Dia Kongo stormed a cellblock to free their leader. But government officials insisted at the time that only a few dozen prisoners had escaped along with him. More than 80 people were killed during the escape, 20 vehicles were burned and a prison office was set ablaze, according to the African Association for the Defense of Human Rights. It was unclear whether any of them were among the escapees.

Dawn Brancheau was the first SeaWorld trainer killed by a killer whale. And now, in a story at Outside Online , I dig deep into the death of Martinez, using extensive interviews with his fiance and family, and information from confidential documents, to explore the tragedy. Alexis Martinez and Keto, the SeaWorld whale that would eventually kill him. I came away understanding much better the inherent dangers of being in the water with killer whales at marine parks, how hard it is to expect that trainers will always make the correct decision given the myriad subjective decisions they must make when they are working with highly intelligent, and highly variable, marine mammals, and how dire the consequences are once a killer whale decides it has had enough. I also came away thinking that the death of Alexis Martinez is directly relevant to the current dispute between SeaWorld and OSHA regarding the safety of killer whale entertainment. I look forward to hearing your comments and feedback on the story, and to following up on some of the issues raised in the story here on my blog. AT A.

Would it be possible for the UK establishment to stop the labour movement of Jeremy Corbyn in the same way? The question for the left in Britain is: if our own head of state would dare to do something similar if progressives win a majority in ?
Add comment March 14th, Headsman. On this date in , the octogenarian Haitian president Pierre Nord Alexis had a number of political opponents arrested and, that very night, summarily executed. That was a strange affair: a misreading of the constitution had Sam set to rule until , until someone caught the mistake. The contest for power boiled down to Nord Alexis on one side, and the scholar and diplomat Joseph Auguste Antenor Firmin on the other.
